Registered office or trading address: explain the difference

The registered office and the place where business is carried out may be different. Explain each address accurately so an address service is not mistaken for a workspace or evidence of the entire operating model.

Identify the official address

CRO describes the registered office as the company’s address for official notices and documents. Ask who receives the post and how urgent correspondence reaches you. If you use a service, confirm its scope and renewal arrangements. Receiving correspondence is an important function, but it is not the same as occupying an office for everyday work.

Describe where the activity happens

List where founders work, where customers are served and where staff or premises are located. Give this account to the bank and tax adviser without replacing it with the registered-office address for convenience. Revenue’s company-residence rules are a separate assessment. Accurate facts are more useful than a single address repeated in every form.

Answer address questions specifically

A provider may ask for registered office, trading location or correspondence address. Read the label and ask for clarification where needed. For example, a company operating online from several countries may need to explain that setup rather than imply all work happens at a mail-handling address. Keep a standard factual description to reduce inconsistent answers.

Agree a correspondence workflow

Choose a contact who reviews incoming notices, a backup during absence and a process for recording what was done. Check whether the address service forwards originals, scans documents or supplies something else; do not assume. When the service or address changes, plan the official update and the handover so important post does not become stranded between providers.

Your practical checklist

  • Record the purpose of each address
  • Confirm the registered-office provider’s actual scope
  • Describe the real trading and management locations
  • Use accurate answers in bank and tax applications
  • Assign notice handling and a backup contact
