Getting started

Build a first-year budget beyond the formation price

Your formation price is one line in a launch budget. Build the rest around the services you need and the way the business will operate, rather than choosing an arbitrary “all-in” estimate.

Begin with a confirmed scope

Use the current package page to identify the formation work included. Put included services in one column and separately quoted services in another. This avoids counting a service twice or leaving it out because you assumed it was bundled. Where renewal terms are not stated, ask for a written quotation before building them into the budget.

Separate launch, annual and usage costs

Create three sections: one-off setup, recurring administration and trading expenses. Accounting, insurance, software, banking and professional advice should be based on your own quotes. Label the payment frequency next to each line. A low monthly charge and a larger annual bill can have very different effects on cash flow even if their total annual cost is similar.

Use scenarios for unknown items

Suppose the founders have not yet decided whether to use a paid registered-office service. Keep two scenarios rather than silently assuming it costs nothing. Similarly, model the business with and without a service you may need. These are your planning assumptions, not provider quotations. Highlight the assumptions that must be resolved before you choose a package.

Track the first renewal separately

Record when each included period ends and who will obtain the next quote. Add reminders before those dates, especially if the company relies on an address or bond service. Keep tax payments outside the service-fee total and ask the accountant how to plan for them. A useful budget shows both expected cost and the decisions that could change it.

Your practical checklist

  • Confirm package inclusions before adding extras
  • Mark each expense as one-off, recurring or usage-based
  • Use actual quotes for business-specific costs
  • Model unresolved choices openly
  • Add renewal dates and a cash-flow reserve
