Map the names you intend to use
Write four lines: legal company name, customer-facing trading name, domain and brand sign or logo. They may look similar, but each line raises a different question. A company trading under another name uses a different CRO business-name process; trademark protection has its own IPOI application and examination. Neither should be inferred from buying a domain.
Search before making expensive commitments
Start with the proposed company name, then review the trading identity and the territory in which you intend to sell. If brand protection matters, discuss suitable searches with a trademark professional. A quick internet search can identify obvious conflicts, but it is not a legal clearance exercise. Record what was searched, when and what still needs advice.
Make the customer identity understandable
Imagine a customer receives an invoice from a legal company name different from the shop name they recognised. Plan how your website, invoice and payment description will explain that relationship consistently. This is a practical communication exercise, not a promise that one particular wording satisfies every legal requirement. Ask an adviser to check the final business disclosures.
Keep ownership and access in the company’s plan
Agree who buys the domain and controls the registrar account. If a founder has already purchased it personally, discuss a suitable handover with your adviser rather than leaving access dependent on one person’s private inbox. Keep renewal reminders and recovery methods available to authorised people. A good brand plan includes continuity as well as a good name.
Your practical checklist
- List all four names and their purposes
- Search legal-name and brand conflicts separately
- Confirm any business-name filing required
- Check customer-facing business disclosures
- Record domain ownership, access and renewals
